The other night all I did was just toggle off Data in the quick panel settings.. Not sure why I never thought of that before but it'll stop all notifications except voice calls.. and friends know better to call in the middle of the night, well at least nowadays they do.. past was a different story but anyhow, only emergency calls are expected.

I use a blank (silent) ringtone for my default ringtone at night then assign people custom ringtones.  Even if you just make the custom ringtone for joe.blow the same as your normal ringtone you can use the silent ringtone as a Night Profile then people you want to be able to call you can always get thru!  I use this for my work so that I can silence my phone and if a computer crashes at night and they call for me I can hear the ring.

Interesting enough, I decided to try a custom version of the newest Verizon Sense 5.5 based on 4.4.2 that was just approved. What I found in there was a Do No Disturb setting that silences everything, and then you are able to add people to the white list so they can get though. I'm not sure if this is part of the stock OS, or rather something that the ROM Dev put in.

Either way, as long as I'm on Sense i'll be using that.
